German automaker Bayerische Motoren Werke AG is the manufacturer of BMW 3 series since 1975. After the 1973 oil crisis, BMW introduced E21 attracting customers and increasing worldwide auto sales figures in three years. BMW 3 Series succeeded BMW New Class and is continuing from five generations in five different body styles. BMW 3 Series has won numerous automotive world awards and honours seeking both prestige and economy. BMW 3 Series has its market expanded in Asia, America, Australia and Europe and is the best-selling car in its class. The BMW 3 series E21 replaced the BMW 2002 and was a two door saloon model. At the 1977 Frankfurt Motor Show, BMW unveiled its new variants of the E21, featuring the new six-cylinder M20 engines. E21 is the first generation of BMW 3 series which was produced from 1975 to 1983. The second generation of BMW 3 series is the E30 which was sold from 1982 and from 1991 in saloon form, and from 1993 in convertible form. BMW introduced the touring version of the E30 at the end of 1987 and it was very popular during its production up to 1994.

BMW 3 series was available with a 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 or 2.5 litre engine and also 2.4 litre turbo diesel. The third generation of BMW 3 series is E36 which is an entry-level luxury car and compact executive car. The E36 experienced enormous success in the market and was the successor to the BMW E30 and was eventually succeeded by the BMW E46 starting in 1999 for saloons, and 2000 for coupes and cabriolets. The BMW 3 E36 series was introduced in 1990 and was sold from 1990 to 2000 in various body styles. E36 was produced in the four-door in early 1990, and initially was sold in Europe only, but was introduced to other worldwide markets after 1 year. The BMW 3 series E36 coupe was produced from 1991, with the Cabriolet version later in 1992. The fourth generation of BMW's 3 Series is E46 which is an entry-level luxury car and compact executive car. BMW 3 series E46 saloon was introduced in 1998 and replaced the E36 in saloon the same year.

The E46 Compact, a 3-door hatchback, was introduced in 2001 to be sold in European and Australian markets. The fifth generation BMW 3 series is E90 and debuted as a saloon (E90) and touring (E91) in March 2005. The BMW 3 series sixth generation is F30 which is expected to arrive for the 2012 model year. The 2012 3 Series is expected to be using new technology of aluminium four-cylinder gasoline engines ranging from 135 to 220 horsepower.
