BMW 5 Series cars are manufactured by BMW since 1972 which is an executive car and is of mid-size.BMW 5 series is BMW's second bestselling model after the 3-Series and represents around 50% of the company's profits. The 5 Series being the fifth of the new series cars after the V-8 and Isetta era. The body of BMW 5 series was styled by Marcello Gandini based on the Bertone 1970 BMW Garmisch 2002ti Geneva show car. Two other cars that have a similar design are Fiat 132 and Alfa Romeo Alfetta, made by Gandini. The new BMW tradition of being named with a three-digit number began in the 5 Series. The first digit represents the model, and the following two digits represent the size of the engine which is the main difference.

The BMW 5 series add additional letters or words to the end of the three-digit number to define the fuel type, engine or transmission details, and the body style. The BMW E12 was the first 5 Series BMW made and the BMW E28 was the second BMW 5 Series, a stylistic evolution of the E12 which was more box-shaped than rounded at the rear. E34 is the third generation 5 Series which earned awards for safety and reliability and was considered one of the most elegant shapes. The BMW E39 was one of BMW's most successful cars, with several different models. The E39 earned a place on Car and Driver's 10Best list and has been widely praised in all aspects. The BMW E60 was the fifth-generation of the 5 Series and was produced from 2003 to 2010. Designed by late BMW designer Davide Arcangeli, Its styling and many of its advanced features received mixed reviews. The most controversial being the "Bangle butt" rear-end, though since then critics have said that the design has aged well as of 2010 and it is noted for its non-traditional BMW design.

The E60 is equipped with an array of safety features, and represents a significant step forward in technology over the previous generation. The sixth generation of the 5-Series made its debut in 2009 as a 2010 model which is F10. It is designed by P.H. McFlagger, and as a reviewer described the F10 as too bland and conservative, compared to the E60 predecessor, a more prominent upright split kidney grille and the absence of the Bangle butt rear-end styling of its E60 predecessor. BMW released the pictures of its production model 5 Series Gran Turismo in 2009, which is considered a coupé-like crossover vehicle or station wagon - a blend of different typical body styles. BMW advertised the new 5 Series GT as The First of its Kind and it is taller than other fastback competitors.
