German automaker BMW manufactured BMW 7 Series cars which has a line of full-size luxury vehicles. The 7 Series has an exterior design theme before they trickle down to smaller sedans in BMW's line-up traditionally introduces technologies. BMW 7 series was introduced in 1977, and is BMW's flagship car and the only one available as a sedan or extended-length limousine. There are five generations of 7 series which are BMW E23, BMW E32, BMW E38, BMW E65 and E66 and BMW F01. The BMW 7 series E23 was introduced between 1977 to 1986. The E32 series had 730i and 735i featuring 3.0 L and 3.5 L straight-6 engines which was introduced in 1986 and lasted till 1994.

The E32 was last 7 series generation to be available exclusively with gasoline engines. The next generation was the E38 generation which was between 1994 to 2001 and was featured in the film Tomorrow Never Dies as the car driven by James Bond in 1997.An E38 735i is the feature car in the film The Transporter, starring Jason Statham in 2002. Then came the fourth generation which was available in four different variants like the standard-wheelbase E65, the extended-wheelbase E66, the High Security version E67 and the hydrogen powered version E68 which dropped the manual transmission entirely. All the E65/E66/E67/E68 7 Series featured BMW's first iDrive system. Most of the car's climate, audio, navigation, suspension and communication settings are controlled with iDrive by using a system of eight menus. However, it was criticized by many automotive writers as being too complex and not innovative enough.

The BMW 7 series was available in thirteen variants and of those, 11 were on sale in Europe, with five available in the U.S. In 2006, the 7 Series was face lifted with a restyled front and rear and a larger range of engines. The 7 Series sports had a new taillight and reduced height for the trunk lid and the front headlight and the kidney grille was changed, and a new front air dam and fog light assembly was introduced in it. The 7 series received minor updates both inside and out in 2007 but the engine option remained the same. BMW 7 series plans to offer a car that runs on both petrol and hydrogen, to be called the Hydrogen 7 and also built armoured versions of the 7 series vehicles. The BMW 7 Series concept for ActiveHybrid was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in 2008 and announced the production versions of the ActiveHybrid 7, along with BMW ActiveHybrid X6.
