BMW M Series is an executive car which is built by the Motorsport division of BMW. BMW M5 is a high performance version and was first introduced at the Amsterdam Motor Show in 1984. Based on the E28 5 Series BMW M5 is the first car which made its debut at Amsterdam Motor Show in 1984. BMW E28 M5 was the product of demand for a road car with the carrying capacity of a saloon, but the overall performance of a sports car. the E28 M5 was the fastest production sedan in the world when it was launched and it utilized the 535i chassis and an evolution of the engine from the BMW M1. The first generation M5 was built in Munich prior to the 1986 Motorsport factory summer vacation and lasted till 1988. The second generation was E34 M5 which was a continuation of BMW's M5 series and was produced from 1988 to 1995, though sales in North America started in 1990 but ended in 1993.

It was entirely hand-built and was produced at BMW M GmbH in Garching, Germany like the previous M5. There were four special editions of the E34 M5 and some were sold in the United Kingdom. The third generation BMW M series was E39 M5 which was not hand built and was introduced in 1998 at the Geneva Motor Show. The E39 M5 Touring was considered, and one prototype was constructed in Titanium Silver with a Black Exclusive leather interior, but later BMW M decided not to produce an E39 M5 Touring due to financial conditions. The fourth generation was the E60 M5 which was introduced in 2005 and was the world's first production sedan to feature a V10 petrol engine which ended in 2010. The M5 also features several Formula One engines and transmission controls and has a launch control which allows maximum performance standing which starts automatically.

The BMW M series E60 M5 was titled as the most powerful midsize sport sedan along with its competitors the Audi RS6 and the Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG. The E61 M5 Touring was introduced which shared the same drivetrain with its sibling and in 2007 became the rival of the Audi RS6 Avant and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Estate. The BMW M series F10 M5 will be first released in the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, and is expected to go on sale by the end of the year. The F10 M5 further will adapt BMW's Efficient Dynamics program to lower the weight and to improve fuel consumption and higher performance. BMW has announced that carbon fibre will be employed substantially in the structure and shell to reduce weight from the previous E60 model. The BMW M Series decided to rule out Hybrid systems from the F10 M5's line up of gadgets as it leads to the extra weight of the car.
