MINI

MINI Car

Mini is a British Motor Corporation which originally influenced a number of car makers. Mini is a small car produced between 1959 till 2000 which was regarded as the British icon of 1960s. Mini has its comparison with the German model Volkswagen Beetle and enjoyed the same popularity as in North America. Mini is a space saving car with front wheel drive layout which had 80% use for passenger and luggage. Mini was considered the most influential car of 20th century after Ford Model T. Mini was manufactured at Long bridge and Cowley plants in England and the Victoria Park in Sydney. Mini also had its plants in Belgium, Spain, Italy, South Africa. The Mini Mark I model had three updates which are Mark II, the Clubman and Mark III. Mini also made series of variations in estate cars, pickup trucks, a van and a Mini Moke.
Mini participated in the Monte Carlo Rally as Cooper and Cooper S which were successful sports rally cars. Mini won consistently for four times from 1964 to 1967 but was disqualified once along with other British cars for illegal combination of headlamps and spotlights. Mini was marketed under its own name in 1969 but initially it was marketed as Austin and Morris names.

The existence of mini came because of the shortage of petrol during the Suez Crisis caused in 1956 and big cars were slumped and so the need for miniature car was designed. Mini car was designed with some basic measures like 10*4*4ft and passenger accommodation should occupy 6ft of the 10ft length and so Issigonis was recruited to BMC in 1955 as he was specialised in designing small cars. The model ADO15 used a BMC A-Series four-cylinder water-cooled engine, but departed from tradition by mounting it transversely, with the engine-oil-lubricated, four-speed transmission in the sump, and by employing front-wheel drive.

All small front-wheel-drive cars developed have a similar configuration, except with the transmission usually separately enclosed rather than using the engine oil. Mini had a radiator which mounted at the left side of the car so that the engine-mounted fan could be retained, but with reversed pitch so that it blew air into the natural low pressure area under the front wing. This saved precious vehicle length, but also had the disadvantage of feeding the radiator with air that had been heated by passing over the engine. The latest mini models are Mini Cooper, Mini Cooper Cabrio, Mini Cooper Countryman, Mini Cooper S and Mini one.
