Mitsubishi was founded in 1870 and is a Japanese conglomerate named as Mitsubishi Group of companies or Mitsubishi companies. Mitsubishi is an automotive company which took forward the legacy of Mitsubishi brand and trade mark. Mitsubishi the name forms two parts mitsu means three and hishi means water caltrop which is translated as three diamonds. Mitsubishi was established as a shipping yard in 1870 and later was diversified in related fields. Mitsubishi entered the coal mining business for coals needed for ship, shipbuilding yard business to repair ships, iron mill to supply iron to shipping yard, marine insurance business for its shipping business and so on.

Mitsubishi also expanded its business further into manufacture of aircraft and equipment with the use of managerial resources and technological capabilities acquired in shipbuilding operations. Mitsubishi also entered in trading business and acquired Takashima and Hashima Island into coal mining in 1881 and 1890. Mitsubishi divided into shipbuilding, banking, insurance, warehousing, and trade and later in paper, steel, glass, electrical equipment, aircraft, oil, and real estate. Mitsubishi helped in the modernisation of Japanese industry. Mitsubishi indulged in manufacture of aircraft in world war II and Mitsubishi A6M was a primary Japanese naval fighter and used by Imperial Japanese Navy pilots.

Mitsubishi participated in Japan's economic growth in 1950s and 1960s. As Japan modernized its energy and materials industries, the Mitsubishi companies created Mitsubishi Petrochemical, Mitsubishi Atomic Power Industries, Mitsubishi Liquefied Petroleum Gas, and Mitsubishi Petroleum Development. The traditional Mitsubishi was on technological development and in new ventures in such fields as space development, aviation, ocean development, data communications, computers, and semiconductors.

Mitsubishi companies also were active in consumer goods and services. Mitsubishi has been engaged in business with customers around the world in many industries, including energy, metals, machinery, chemicals, food and general merchandise. The latest Mitsubishi models are Mitsubishi Lancer, Mitsubishi Cedia, Mitsubishi outlander, Mitsubishi Pajero, Mitsubishi Montero and Mitsubishi Lancer evolution. Mitsubishi Lancer and Mitsubishi Cedia, and SUVs running on diesel like the Mitsubishi Pajero and Mitsubishi Montero, have built inroads all over the world.
