Spyker Cars N.V. is a Dutch hand-built automobile manufacturer founded in 2000 at Zeewolde, Netherlands, is not related to or controlled by the previous Spyker company that went bankrupt in 1929. Spyker was founded by brothers Jacobus and Hendrik-Jan Spijker in Hilversum, Netherlands, in 1880, for coach and carriage production. The modern Spyker Cars only has the legal right to the brand name. The company's motto is "Nulla tenaci invia est via", which is Latin for "For the tenacious, no road is impassable".

In 1898 Spyker manufactured the "Golden Carriage", still in use by the Dutch Queen today. In 1901 the Company commenced to manufacture the Spijker-Benz automobiles under Benz’s license and built a new factory, the Industriele Maatschappij Trompenburg. In 1903 the name Spijker was changed into Spyker to facilitate marketing abroad. Spykers were extremely luxurious, high quality and endurable cars, rated among the best in the world. In 1914, due to financial problems, the Company merged with the Dutch Aircraft Factory N.V. The Spykar 60 HP was one of its first successful model as it was one of the world’s first single engine four wheel drive with four wheel brakes.

The company was renamed the Dutch Car and Aircraft Company in 1915. In 1922 the Company went bankrupt and was bought by one of its distribuitors and was reorganised under the name Spyker Automobielfabriek. In 1925, car production was ceased. The rights to the Spyker brand were bought in 1999 by Victor Muller, who founded Spyker Automobielen BV , later changed to Spyker Cars NV. The new company produces racing, utility, handmade and customized cars. Since 2000, Spyker has been building exclusive sports cars like the C8 Spyder and the C8 Laviolette. The racing and aviation heritage of the early cars has been carried over to the contemporary Spykers, as their design is being heavily influenced by airplanes and aerodynamics.

Spyker acquired Midland F1 Racing Limited (MF1 Racing) of Silverstone, United Kingdom from Midland Resources Holding Ltd. The Formula 1 team called Spyker MF1 Racing. Spyker Cars announced that it would have to sell all or part of the team due to a potential split of the team from its parent company. On September 3, 2007 Indian billionaire Dr Vijay Mallya (Chairman and CEO of Toyota sponsors Kingfisher Airlines) and Dutch entrepreneur Michiel Mol (Spyker’s Formula One Director), stated the Spyker board had accepted their offer and became the new owners of the Spyker Formula One team.
