Volvo Car

Volvo Cars is a Swedish manufacturer of luxury passenger vehicles – independent from the company that’s responsible for Volvo trucks and other vehicles and machinery. The Swedish carmaker is currently owned by American car giant Ford Motor Company. A Swedish ball bearing company, SFK (Svenska Kullagerfabriken AB), established the Volvo car company in 1927 in the island of Hisingen, city of Gothenburg, Sweden where the current headquarters are. Volvo means “I’m rolling” or “I roll” in Latin – which can be interpreted like “I drive” in a more modern logic.

The auto maker Volvo, however, manufactured its first car Volvo OV 4 Series on 14 April 1927, when it was officially founded. It first rolled out of the factory in Hisingen, Gothenburg. The company was first registered as separate company within SKF in 1911. Volvo Car Corporation was part of Ford Motor Company's Premier Automotive Group. After the sale of Jaguar Land Rover to Tata Motors of India, Ford decided to keep Volvo Cars despite mounting losses and gross economic down turns. I
Volvo was first started with the vision and aim of creating a car which could withstand the rough road and the cold climate of Sweden. Since then it has become a trademark feature of all Volvo products. In the year 1999, the car division of the brand was sold to Ford group for $6.45 billion. The commercial utility vehicle sector of this company is very strong; the company's trucks are famous for its strong endurance ability and durability.

The company has also got its hands into the making of marine engines and high tech aerospace accessories and parts. The Volvo 144 saloon was a hit in the seventies. Volvo group is the third largest heavy-duty truck manufacturer in the world. Apart from trucks, the company makes city buses, intercity buses and coaches which are sold in more than 130 countries. Volvo was the first company to manufacture cars with padded dashboards. The Volvo S80 model did a very good job. The Volvo XC70 is one new model in Estate class. Volvo produces models ranging from SUVs, wagons, and sedans to compact executive sedans and coupes. The company market share in new markets such as Russia, China and India is flourishing. Volvo manufacturing facilities in India were started in 1998, with its first production plant in India located at Hoskote, which is near Bangalore.
